Terms of Use

Effective date: November 1, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Daniel Self (“we”, “us”) for the Camera Carbon app (the “App”). By using the App you agree to them. If you don’t agree, don’t use the App.

1. The App

Camera Carbon suggests camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, film and similar) to recreate the look of reference photographs with the gear you own, and includes an optional community where photographers share their own photos and settings.

Settings for reference photographs come from documented sources, reported accounts or our estimates, and the App labels which is which. Matches are suggestions, not guarantees: results depend on light, subject, equipment and technique.

2. Eligibility and accounts

3. Community guidelines

You accept these guidelines in the App before you post or comment. They apply to everything you share:

  1. Post only photographs you made yourself. No reposts of other people’s work.
  2. Share real settings. Mark anything you are unsure of in the caption.
  3. No nudity, sexual content, violence, hate, harassment or spam. There is zero tolerance: content is removed and accounts that break these rules are removed.
  4. Be generous with tips and kind in comments. Critique the photo, never the person.
  5. Don’t post photos of private people in sensitive situations without their consent.

Zero tolerance. We do not tolerate objectionable content or abusive users. This includes sexual or pornographic content, graphic violence, hate speech or symbols, harassment, bullying, threats, content that sexualises or endangers minors, illegal content, and spam or advertising. Content that breaks these rules is removed, and the accounts that post it are removed, without warning.

4. Reporting, blocking and enforcement

5. Your content

You keep ownership of the photos, captions, comments and profile details you post (“your content”). You confirm that you made the photos you post, or otherwise have the rights to share them, and that people who can be identified in them have agreed where needed.

By posting, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, resize, re-encode, display and distribute your content in the App, including showing it to other members and featuring it in the App’s Featured feed, and to show it, credited to your handle, in promotion of Camera Carbon. This license is only for operating and promoting the App. It ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies other people have already shared, copies in backups that expire on their normal schedule, and where we must keep it to meet a legal obligation or enforce these terms.

You are responsible for your content. We don’t endorse it and are not obliged to monitor it, although we do moderate it as described above.

6. Library content

The reference photographs shown in the App are in the public domain or available under open licenses (such as CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA), sourced from archives and museums including Wikimedia Commons, the Library of Congress and museum open-access collections. Images under an attribution license are credited with the author and a link to the source record, which states the license. Works still under copyright are described (title, date, camera, film). Some are shown as a small preview loaded directly from the page where the rights holder or an institution publishes them; we don’t host these images, we credit the rights holder and link to that page. Anyone can take a preview down at once with “Request removal” under it, or by emailing us. Otherwise the App links to where you can view the work.

The App’s design, software, text and data compilation are ours or our licensors’. We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use the App on devices you own or control, under these terms and the rules of the store you got it from (the App Store’s Usage Rules or Google Play’s terms). If you believe something in the library is credited or licensed wrongly, email us and we will correct or remove it.

7. Camera Carbon Pro subscriptions

The App is free to use with limits (for example a set number of settings matches a month and a few saved matches). Camera Carbon Pro removes those limits and adds Pro features, as described in the App at the time of purchase.

8. Acceptable use

Don’t:

9. Disclaimers and liability

The App is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of settings, gear data and photographer information. We don’t guarantee the App will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that community content is accurate or appropriate.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, profits or photographs, and our total liability for any claim about the App is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or USD 50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer under the law of your country.

10. Apple

These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the App or its content, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it, and is not responsible for claims relating to the App (including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, or intellectual property claims). If the App fails to meet an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple may refund the purchase price; Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US government embargo and are not on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Where these terms don’t cover something, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies.
